Mary Marchant grew up on a farm in the central valley of California.  She obtained all of her advanced degrees at the University of California Davis. Upon graduating with a PhD in agricultural economics, she joined the University of Kentucky faculty, where she worked for 17 years, culminating with leadership roles as Departmental Director of Undergraduate Studies, Steering Committee member for the NCAA Division I Certification Self-Study, and Chair of the President’s Commission on Women-Scientific and Professional Advancement subcommittee.

Dr. Marchant joined Virginia Tech as Associate Dean and Director of Academic Programs for the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences in April 2006 and recently joined the VT Department of Agriculture and Applied Economics faculty.  She has received numerous honors and awards, including the American Agricultural Economics Association’s Distinguished Teaching Award and the Fulbright Distinguished Chair in Agricultural Economics in Italy. Dr. Marchant has published extensively with over 45 journal articles and refereed publications, and built a research and teaching program funded by more than $2 million in grants, including five USDA National Research Initiative competitive grants.
