George W. Norton

George Norton joined the faculty in 1980 and serves on the department's Graduate Advisory Committee. He teaches courses on international agricultural development and trade. His research program has an interdisciplinary orientation and focuses on international agricultural development, agricultural research evaluation, and integrated pest management. Current projects include development of methods for evaluating social and economic impacts of agricultural biotechnologies, for assessing the environmental benefits of integrated pest management programs, and for setting agricultural and energy research priorities. He has conducted research and extension in several countries in Latin America, Africa, and Asia.
Professor Norton served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Colombia, worked with an American Indian tribe in South Dakota on tribal farm planning, and has consulted for the United States Agency for International Agricultural Development, Winrock International, the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization, The World Bank, the Bi-national Agricultural Research and Development Fund, the International Livestock Research Center, and other agencies. He currently serves as chair of the Technical Committee of the Integrated Pest Management Collaborative Research Support Program (IPM CRSP), a multi-institutional international IPM project. He is also a member of regional research project NC-1003, "Impact Analysis and Decision Strategies for Agricultural Research". He was a visiting professor at Cornell University in 1987-88, and at the Economic Research Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture from August 1999 to July 2000.
