What is Agribusiness Management and Applied Economics?

Agricultural and applied economics focuses on educating students to be able to evaluate economic choices in the production, distribution, and consumption of agricultural food products and services; the management of farm and agribusiness firms; the resolution of natural resource and environmental problems; and the development of rural communities. Emphasis in this field of study is on courses in decision making and management, such as finance, marketing, and production, as well as courses covering economic principles, business, natural resources, and agriculture. Agricultural and applied economics provides an important link between the industry of agriculture, the business world, environmental policy, and community development, both domestically and internationally.

Career Opportunities: Employment opportunities are excellent in this area. Students are prepared to enter graduate school in many fields including agricultural economics, business, economics, and law.

Agricultural and Applied Economics Program at Virginia Tech

The Virginia Tech Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics currently offers five options of study: Agribusiness Management, Environmental Economics, Management and Policy; International Trade and Development; Community Economic Development; and Veterinary Business Management. The Veterinary Business Management option is a pre-veterinary program in which the student can qualify for admission to Veterinary School and complete a management degree.

Students receive their education in a personalized setting with individual advising and have access to a faculty of 26 professionals with private sector, governmental, environmental and international experience. Students have the opportunity to take internships to apply their knowledge, to travel internationally, and to work with professional groups.
